Palmer separated himself from every day company activities when he declared he was going to spend time teaching SR at UCSD. He advises the company in technology matters, but creating products is left to others. A product has to fit into the existing matrix of equipment and so that requires bending your concept to accept the inadequacies of what went before. Compromises and concessions always dilute the added value of innovation and the result is that creators separate themselves from the pecuniary aspect of hatching a new technology, since they don't want to watch their baby whittled away.

Sure would love to see MRVC develop a relation with SR. Whereas they aren't of sufficient mass to give SR a push, it would be interesting to discover if there existed a synergy between the two. That depends on the metro and last mile applicability of SR. It has been assumed that SR gets its advantage in the long haul, but I think the added value comes locally. I believe MRV can develop a local high traffic switch using SR technology and make a major dent in the accepted WDM models. That seems to fit into Noam's style. Am I dreaming?
