Partnership will promote mobile electronic services in Asia

A partnership of industry leaders has been formed to encourage the development of mobile electronic services in Asia. The Asia Mobile Electronic Services Alliance (AMESA) will be led by Chartered Bank with the aim of combining smart card, mobile phone and PKI technology together with open standards to support mobile electronic services in Asia.

AMESA will give customers access to electronic services through a multi-application smart card that is based on the Visa Open Platform. Gemplus and Microsoft will supply the multi-application smart card technology. By combining smart card and mobile phone technology, AMESA will enable customers to access a range of electronic services including banking, electronic commerce, bill payment, trading and information. Security will be provided through the use of PKI technology.

The organisations forming AMESA include: Standard Chartered; Ericsson; Gemplus Technologies; Hong Kong Post; Microsoft; Motorola; Nokia; SingTel Mobile; SingNet; Singapore Post; SmarTone; The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; The Open University of Hong Kong; The National University of Singapore; and Visa International.
