Focal Communications Corporation Selects Nortel Networks For Network Expansion

-Nortel Networks' Succession Network to Provide Focal's Next Generation

Solution-

ATLANTA, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Under a three-year, US$75 million agreement, Focal Communications Corporation, a Chicago-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) to provide DMS-500 multi-service switching, incorporating Nortel Networks' Succession Network, for its national expansion. The network expansion supports Focal's strategic move into 20 markets by the end of 2000.

We are very pleased to continue our strong relationship with Nortel Networks in order to provide communication services to our current and future customer base,'' commented Robert Taylor, Focal's president and CEO.

We are proud that Focal has chosen to build on its existing Nortel Networks' infrastructure,'' said Richard Reid, president, Nortel Networks Global Carrier Solutions, CLECs and IXCs. ''Focal's endorsement of our Succession Network strategy confirms our ongoing leadership in providing next generation network solutions for Internet telephony.''

Focal currently offers communication services to communications-intensive users in Boston; Chicago; Los Angeles; New York; Northern New Jersey; Northern Virginia; Oakland; Orange County; Philadelphia; San Francisco; San Jose; and Washington, D.C. Additional DMS-500 switches will also be installed in cities currently serviced by Focal to meet increased demands.

Nortel Networks' DMS-500 multi-service switching system allows service providers to offer an extensive portfolio of local and long-distance voice and data services today, while positioning carriers for transformation to a multi-service next generation, packet-based Succession Network. The Succession Network is an open, standards-based solution that enables service providers to offer the revenue-generating telephony services that drive the bulk of their business today and the new end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) services that the market is increasingly demanding-all without the expense of a data overlay network.

Focal Communications Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, is a facilities-based communications provider that offers data and voice services to large corporations, Internet service providers and value-added resellers. Focal currently services 12 major markets and has announced plans to deploy service in a total of 20 markets nationwide by the end of year 2000, encompassing 50 metropolitan statistical areas. Additional information is available on Focal's web site at www.focal.com.
