South Africa interested in oil from Libya

TUNIS, Reuters World Service, May 26
Libya, South Africa, initialise cooperation accords
...
South African Press Association (SAPA) in
Jahnnesburg on Tuesday quoted Minister of
Mineral and Energy Affairs Peneull Maduna
who was on the visit to Libya as saying that
South Africa was interested in buying oil from
OPEC-member Libya if prices could be
agreed.

''If they give us a good deal, we'll lift it,'
Maduna was quoted as saying.

Officials from state oil exploration Soekor and
Energy Africa (ENRJ.J) were also on the visit
among businessemen representing mining
exploration, agricultural equipment,
construction, banking, aviation equipment
and services, electricity and
telecommunications.

The South Africans were one of the first
foreign delegations to visit Libya since U.N.
sanctions were lifted last month after Libyan
leader Muammar Gaddafi handed over two
suspects in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing for
trial in the Netherlands.

South African President Nelson Mandela
played a central role in reaching a
compromise resolution of the Lockerbie issue.

''The handover of the two suspects in the
Lockerbie case has created favourable
conditions for Libya's full reintegration into
the international community which opens up
many opportunities for the South African
business community,'' deputy foreign minister
Aziz Pahad said before the visit.
