Ray,
A couple of days ago I e-mailed BT to ask when I'd be able to get a DSL service, as I intend to set myself up with a broadband internet capability. I phrased my enquiry in terms of "is DSL nearly here, or should I buy cable ?" ( Sorry, I did't keep the exact wording. )
The answer didn't do much to convince me that DSL would be here any time soon. Combined with BT's latest results, should we deduce that they're simply making too much on ISDN, and don't want to kill that particular golden goose by providing DSL ?
Anyway, I find the statement "This ends a four year wait ..." to be a little premature. What do you think ?
Graham.
---- BT response to DSL enquiry -----
Graham Thank you for your message about ADSL. BT have undertaken several trials in this area. The latest one in West London started in Oct 98 and runs through to Summer 99 and details can be found at isntrial.bt.com. The trial will determine the future development and next steps for the evolution to an ISN and will refine service definitions and prices for high-speed access network services. However, BT is not at this time able to confirm when and if the ISN will be launched. In the meantime watch out for Press announcements about progress with the Trial.
Sorry there are no firmer details to give you, Regards Fay Owston, Information Services, BT Labs |
