By the time EDIG's player is released, it will not be "the first of." Rather, it will be competing against devices that have either been out for some time or are in direct competition with other devices that have been out for some time (ie. MP3 players). The RIO can now be had for $150 and by Christmas, probably $99-$120.

Yes, "adding hardware to make a better product" is not always the best strategy (I'll reference you to the video card markets newest strategy....same graphics chip, different speed & different memory sizes to meet different consumer demands). It increases cost, which is never a good thing especially in consumer products. Besides, who says an external read/write makes a portable player any better? For $15-20 less, I'd prefer to just plug my portable into a cable (ie. RIO) than have an external read/write device laying around, just waiting to get lost, broke, or in the way of my PC setup. Hopefully, the external drive will be an option, not a requirement.

We already knew that the EDIG/LU portable device also came with an external read/write device? I don't think "we already knew" that.
