Terrence I am happy to tell you that it is becoming increasingly
clear that we now understand the quantum mechanics of
black-holes from a string theory point of view. Needless
to say this is significant progress. Hawking's calculation
was of course semi-classical. The new computing methods
suffer none of the infinities that so bothered you and Galt.
Nevertheless they confirm and extend Hawking's results.

These are very recent developments.
