I have to wonder if Amgen would be where it is if it had gone a similar route. A big part of the revenues from "Hits" goes to fund all the work on the loser candidates, and this isn't covered if you sell royalty based "calls" on (all) your hits. Even 20% isn't adequate to run a discovery and development business on. I am reminded of the niche Marion Labs filled licensing in winners and developing them- they captured the lion's share of the margin. The Market seemed to have liked the deal to some extent but does not appear they will get rich. Mainly I object to these type of deals as they preclude "munching" if done with multiple partners.
