Re: "K7 Preview followup"

"While it is an "Engineering Sample" the K7 we have is a very recent build, and according to our sources, is as close to release as AMD will be able to accomplish by June. "

So this was a very nearly production part, if you can call it that. It may be that the chipset is not as far along and that may affect benchmarks, but maybe not. The benchmarks were run under Win98, of course, not NT where the Intel architecture shines, but it is also unclear how much the K7 will benefit from NT as well. So we have rather unimpressive benchmarks for the K7 (compared to hype) when going up against the .25u PIII under Win98, which puts Intel architecture in it's worst possible light. What's going to happen when the K7 is compared to Coppermine under NT? Remember the K7 claims of "fastest processor in the universe"? I suspect it will turn out to be "fastest processor in the universe only under some special benchmarks run under Win98 with special non standard drivers on an expensive motherboard loaded with huge L2 cache and special hardware". It won't be long before you guys wish you could go back to the "foils".
