Seagram, AT&T, BMG form digital music alliance AT&T Corp. (T: news, msgs), Matsushita Electric, BMG Entertainment and Seagram's (VO: news, msgs) Universal Music Group said Wednesday they will jointly develop technology for delivering music and other media securely over the Internet. "Creating a networked digital music industry is akin to creating a new economy," said AT&T Chairman Mike Armstrong. He said that "a new economy of digital music can achieve explosive growth." The consortium's Electronic Media Distribution, or EMD, technology will be designed to give users an easy way to obtain and play music, along with graphics, video, links to Web sites and printed lyrics, the companies said. EMD technology will also allow storage of the media on consumer electronics products from personal computers to DVD players. The companies said the project will be "consistent with the work-to-date and standards to be established" by the music industry's effort, the Secure Digital Music Initiative.

SportsLine wins Major League Baseball Web job Major League Baseball and SportsLine USA (SPLN: news, msgs) announced a multiyear exclusive agreement for the sports site to produce and host baseball's official Web sites. The online sites will be launched in mid-June. They will include live audio broadcasts of games, video highlights and real-time statistics, and SportsLine's animated pitch-by-pitch coverage of every game. |
