Thread
Recently someone here called for some new ideas so we don't get bogged down on the same subjects. While I'm no expert on the following subject it strikes me that it could be the next "killer app" and might be worthy of discussion. (Besides it could serve as an ongoing case study for me as I continue to digest "the manual.")

The area I'm thinking of is e commerce and more specifically the segment known as electronic bill paying and presentment, sometimes referred to as EBPP(those who are knowledgeable please feel free to correct my jargon if its off base).

I'm not thoroughly familiar with the sector yet, however my investigation to date leads me to believe this will be a huge market and that the successful players might lead to a gorrilla situation. As far as I know, the most identifiable firm in the US market is Checkfree. I suspect there are other leading candidates however I'm not sure exactly who. In Canada, a company called BCE Emergis (IFM - TSE) is a leading player, currently tagged as the likely ebpp provider to the big banks up here. Emergis is a subsidiary of BCE (aka Bell Canada) who is also a part owner (about 40% now, down from 100% back in the 70s, much like LU/ATT relationship of old) of Nortel Networks. Emergis has a strong backer here and will be a factor in the development of this market north of the border. BCE recently struck a deal with Ameritech, who will be taking a minority share in BCE, which may provide Emergis a gateway to the larger US EBPP market.

Enough rambling. I'd be very interested to hear what the thread thinks of the potential of this market, perhaps within the context of e commerce overall. Personally, I think this will become a big play, perhaps on a magnitude comparable with e mail over time.

Bricks and roses encouraged.
