NEC reportedly to spend 30-40 bln yen to boost global DRAM output

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - NEC Corp will spend 30-40 bln yen to boost its global
output of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips by summer 2000 to an
equivalent 30 mln units of 64-megabit DRAM chips a month, the Nihon Keizai
newspaper reported.
NEC currently manufactures a total of 12 mln units of 64M DRAM chips a
month at the UK plant and two domestic plants located in Hiroshima and Kumamoto
prefectures, the newspaper said.
The move will expand its share in the global DRAM chip market vis-a-vis
Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology Inc, the report said.
Starting from this autumn, the company will raise production capacity of
64M DRAM chips at the UK plant to 15 mln units by summer next year from the
current 4 mln, the newspaper said.
At the Hiroshima plant, NEC will introduce the most-advanced manufacturing
equipment to ensure production capacity of 10 mln units, according to the
report.
