>>"At Design SuperCon two weeks ago, Amati chief technology officer John Cioffi said that programmable DSPs may represent the future of DSL modems, particularly if both Carrierless Amplitude/Phase modulation and Discrete Multitone ADSL line codes continue to be popular. Rather than choose between the two, Cioffi said, users may look to one modem with programmable DSP that supports either line code."FEB 97
Apparently, Cioffi thinks a CAP/DMT modem is a forseeable product. Will Amati make it? Who knows?
People on this board mention TI, MOT and ADI DSP's but is there not a few startups making simuliar products...Chromatic Research and MicroUnity. They were in the news last year. Are their products applicable to xDSL products? Are Chromatic's production chips or MicroUnity's "vapor" chips superior to TI's? I'd like my Amati modem (DMT/CAP) now and my ISP to offer ADSL now whoever makes the chips.<<

Mike -

I don't believe anyone has anything on the market close to TI's Cx6. For the time being, they blew away the rest of the industry.

To be honest, programmable DSPs will represent the future of DSL modems whether there were two different line codes or one!

Thank you for the latest in Cioffi quotes. Any others to add?

One look at the membership list of the ADSL Forum's Principle & Auditing Member's tells you how many companies are working in ADSL.

We mention TI, MOT, NEC because these are dominate players. TI has 45% of the current DSP market, MOT worlds largest Communications company, and NEC which is huge in the Pacific Rim, and has it's eye on the U.S. for VDSL. These are Amati's partners, the Amati key to insuring a huge DMT presence.
As I have stated in these hallowed halls numerous times, "If Amati has done an excellent job thus far on the Semiconductor side, I see no reason why they can't continue on the same path. These, and future deals were formed years ago, it just takes what seems to be a long time for them to come to fruition. Though I would say Amati & USRX has not been a long engagement.

Amati is already tied to USRX via TI, should Amati/USRX have some contract to announce, it only continues the pattern of working with #1 companies in their field. And after getting MOT, they have always gotten excellent contracts. Hence not accepting Pairgain's pittance of an offer.

Of course a telco contract will really get the ball rolling. Gee! who could that be ;^)

Then there is ADI who needs to learn how to play ball..

John F. Kennedy once said " and when we play football at my house, we play by my rules. and I guess you know why! It's my ball that's why!" add your own JFK accent.
