I read a different history of Bach and Mozart than you did.

Evidently. Bach was an early success. At the age of 29 he was appointed court concertmaster to the duke of Weimar; a few years later he was named Kappellmeister to the duke of Cöthen. Subsequently he removed to Leipzig, where he served as cantor of the Thomasschule, an important position. Probably he wasn't rich--he had a large family to support, 20 children by two wives--but neither was he starving in a garret. Mozart was a famous as the come; a real star. His financial difficulties were in very large part due to his own extravagance.

Don't believe everything you read. Some people actually still think that Michelangelo had girlfriends and painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling lying on his back.
