SAN JOSE -- Schlumberger ATE has opened the Schlumberger Advanced Business Engineering Resources (SABER) Technology Center here, the second of eight planned centers Schlumberger is opening this year to target the specialized needs of regional customers.

The new technology center will focus on Rambus characterization and fabless supply chain services to enable regional customers to achieve faster time-to-market for RDRAM, ASIC and system-on-chip (SOC) devices.

Schlumberger personnel at the facility will offer expertise in design verification, device characterization, test cell integration, failure analysis, design debug, thermal characterization and other processes. The site is a working, integrated environment to enable SABERexperts and their clients to develop best practices and new test solutions.

"Fabless customers and traditional manufacturers alike must address the unique test challenges posed by today's rapidly evolving technologies, especially the new RDRAM and SOC devices," stated Jean-Luc Pelissier, SABER vice president and general manager. "They can now significantly benefit from outsourcing to SABER the special test capabilities that are not part of their core expertise."

The Silicon Valley SABER Technology Center will house leading-edge Schlumberger diagnostic and test equipment, including the RDX2200 RDRAM test system, which meets Rambus specifications for speed and accuracy across multiple sites; the industry's first 400 MHz logic test system; electron beam probing systems; thermal control test systems; and the EXA2000 high-performance SOC test solution.

SABER was launched last year to provide technical and business management services to the semiconductor industry, particularly fabless companies (see Oct. 21, 1998, story). SABER acts as a performance-based "general contractor" across the entire silicon cycle, helping companies maximize existing equipment and processes.

Schlumberger opened the first SABRE center in Fuchinobe, Japan. It has planned centers for Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, France (two sites) and the U.K. this year.
