Mylex eXtremeRAID 1100 Helps Acer Break New TPC-C Price/Performance World Record for Enterprise-Class Server

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 1999--

RAID Controller Boosts Performance of AcerAltos 21000
While Eliminating I/O Bottlenecks

Mylex Corp. (Nasdaq:MYLX), the world's leading vendor of
RAID controllers in the non-captive systems marketplace, today
announced that its eXtremeRAID(TM) 1100 controller has helped Acer
Inc. achieve a new transaction processing performance world-record for
the AcerAltos 21000 server, according to a recently completed TPC-C
benchmark.
TPC-C is a rigorous benchmark conducted under supervision of the
Transaction Process Performance Council (http://www.tpc.org) and
provides an indication of real-world server performance in online
transaction processing (OLTP) environments.
"Mylex's eXtremeRAID 1100 controller played a critical role in
our breaking the world record," said Frank Sun, associate vice
president, Acer Server Product Line Management, Branded Business Unit.
"We chose the controller because of its high performance and
bottleneck-prevention capabilities. Our customers with data-intensive
environments will see a huge improvement in overall data throughput."
The AcerAltos 21000 server achieved a 23,235.57 tpmC
(transactions per minute) rating at a cost of only $16.66/tpmC,
establishing a new TPC-C world record for price/performance. These
results further eXtremeRAID's track record of performance
achievements. Windows NT Magazine named the controller an Editor's
Favorite in their May 17 issue.
eXtremeRAID 1100 and its predecessor, the DAC960PJ, have enabled
numerous high-end server manufacturers to establish several TPC-C
world records in pure performance and in price/performance. The
Transaction Process Performance Council has posted Acer's report at
tpc.org.
"We congratulate our valued OEM partner Acer on breaking the
world record and are proud that eXtremeRAID 1100 contributed to this
achievement," said Eric Herzog, vice president of marketing for Mylex.
"eXtremeRAID 1100 works seamlessly with AcerAltos 21000's Pentium III
Xeon processors to maximize data throughput and eliminate the storage
as the most common point of failure on the network."

eXtremeRAID 1100 Delivers Record-Setting Performance for
Enterprise-Class Servers

eXtremeRAID 1100 achieves its award-winning performance by
integrating several advanced technologies, such as Mylex firmware, a
233 MHz Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) StrongARM(R) on-board RISC processor, and
a 64-bit PCI bus and multiple Ultra2 SCSI LVD buses. The controller
delivers performance greater than 8,000 I/Os per second as compared to
the 2,500 I/Os per second typical of many other mid-range and high-end
controllers.
The controller's Ultra2 SCSI LVD (low voltage differential)
technology doubles maximum data throughput rates between the disk
drive and the controller by raising data transfer rate bandwidth to 80
MB/sec per channel from the typical 40 MB/sec per channel.
Compared to typical 32-bit bus architectures, eXtremeRAID 1100's
64-bit PCI bus effectively doubles the data bandwidth path between the
RAID controller and the PC server. The 64-bit PCI bus supports burst
rates up to 266 MB/sec. Traditional 32-bit PCI buses only support
burst data transfer rates up to 133 MB/sec.
eXtremeRAID 1100 is the first 64-bit controller to be Microsoft
Cluster Server (MSCS) certified for clustering, a method that improves
network availability by connecting two servers to the same storage
source. eXtremeRAID 1100's support for PCI Hot Plug also increases
availability by allowing network administrators to replace controllers
while the system is still up and running.
eXtremeRAID 1100 supports all major operating systems, including
Windows NT, Linux (through third parties), NetWare, SCO UNIX, UnixWare
and OS/2.

Specifications, Pricing and Availability

eXtremeRAID 1100 is available in two and three channel
configurations with MSRP pricing starting at $1,395 for a two-channel
configuration. eXtremeRAID 1100 can be purchased through Mylex's
worldwide channel network, which includes distributors, resellers and
systems integrators. eXtremeRAID 1100 is also available through
Mylex's worldwide team of PC server OEM partners.
