Bandwidth Wars: Cable modems face hurdles CNNfn - May 24, 1999: 11:36 a.m. ET Despite predicted demand, cable modems see retail challenges Chicago (internetTelephony) -Recent projections by Paul Kagan & Associates suggest that 1.6 million customers will receive data service via cable modem by the end of 1999, and cable modem users will outnumber digital subscriber line customers by two-to-one for the next decade at least. But those numbers will be hard to achieve if customers can't buy their own modems at an electronics store and install them. The problem is more acute than a year ago because digital subscriber line (DSL) modems built on G.lite are now moving into retail channels - mostly via computer manufacturers that are building them into PCs. But in the mean time, manufacturers are working to find customers who can use their products. 3Com Corp (COMS)., whose CMX cable modem just received DOCSIS certification, piggybacks its own database of customers onto service listings being compiled by @Home (ATHM) and RoadRunner. cnnfn.com o~~~ O
