Gambling Ban Means Drawback for College Sports

Wed May 26 1999

Does the National Gambling Impact Study Commission really understand the nature of gambling? Their call last week to ban legalized wagering on college sports to ensure the purity of the games is likely to have the reverse effect, writes Randy Harvey of the LA Times. Forcing legal college sports gambling underground is an open invitation to the Mafia. Now, it's the legal sportsbooks that notice and report unusual betting patterns. Jay Kornegay, race and sports director at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, worries about the integrity of collegiate sports if the ban takes effect: ''It's not like you're going to get Al or Guido calling the FBI and saying, ‘Hey, guys, we're seeing some unusual betting patterns here.' ''
