Remember the MM's almost never have to pay. They make money whether a stock is going up or going down on the spread. They may temporarily go long or short a stock to add to their own earnings but can easily protect themselves if they guess wrong.

I assume you mean investment groups or individuals who are short when you say that they will pay soon. Not the MMs.

There may or may not be a short position with NPEC. If the news is a good as Dave D thinks it is, the stock will move nicely even without any kind of squeeze.
