JavaSoft Creates Directory Interface
By Andy Patrizio
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- JavaSoft will announce the week of March 10 the Java Naming and Directory Services Interface, which will let Java apps communicate with network directory services. JNDI, developed with Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Netscape Communications and Novell, will support Novell Directory Service, Sun's Network Information Service (NIS), LDAP 2 and 3, and Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) naming services. In the future, it will work with Microsoft's Active Directory Service Interface. "This allows people to use Java in the context of a network operating system more effectively and reach out to existing services," said Jim Mitchell, VP of technology and architecture at JavaSoft. "There's a real need for it in the enterprise, where you're trying to find services, E-mail addresses, etc." Novell will release a draft implementation of the spec the same week.
