I don't know enough about DSL. I believe this is a technology that allows copper (telephone) wires to work much faster than regular phone lines but its very expensive. I'm not sure what the cost/benefit(speed) ratio is for cable versus DSL. Of course there are fiber optics lines too, as well as T-1 and T-3 links for companies. But cable seems the wave of the future for band--width, and of course there will be satellite dishes as well.
