a friend of mine works for Bell Atlantic and is involved in their rollout of DSL. I was talking to him recently about the differences b/t DSL and cable and that I thought cable seemed like the better option. What I didnt realize (and this may be common knowledge to alot of people who are familiar with DSL vs cable) was that cable is going to have a bandwidth problem. While cable may be capable of greater speeds than DSL, the problem lies in diminishing returns. We all have phone lines going into our houses or apt's and those phone lines are dedicated to each of us individually. On the other hand while we may all have cable access in our homes that cable is carrying centralized content. In other words, we may all have separate cable lines but they are all bringing us the same thing in a local area. It is one signal across many outlets, while DSL is a different line for every outlet. People who have been demoing cable have found that it is great at first but that as more people in their area begin to use cable access it slows things down considerably. IT is a situation of diminishing returns. DSL doesnt have that problem.
That is my understanding. This may be common knowledge or there may be a number of factors that make this argument irrelevant. I dont know b/c I have not been following all this too closely but this is what I was told by my friend.
