Yes it is dumb.

If for example they included a speech recognition program on CD with every PIII system. That would add great value to the PIII (perhaps $80 at a <<$1 cost.

Additional things could be a video camera.

Single chip CMOS camera's can be built for under $10 in Intels volumes now. This has a retail value of $100.

Pretty soon the consumer figures he's getting great new features such as video conferencing etc for free and much more horsepower.

Or how about an on-line encyclopedia - much more comprehensive than the typical microsoft CD that you pay $100 for - but you can only enter with the PIII ID. This would appeal to parents to fork out a fe hundred bucks for Junior.

They need to be much much more creative and try to build value in the PIII.

I think dancing bunnies and silly robots have clearly failed.
