I just saw an article where the Mayor of Detroit, speaking at a shopping mall trade group convention, was exhorting the members to lobby congress for sales tax reform on internet sales to "level the playing field". The numbers cited were estimates of sales of $100 billion by 2003 and $7 billion of lost sales tax revenue. Is there anyone here who seriously thinks that the web will escape taxation much beyond the three year moratorium or that the states will not challenge the moratorium even sooner. Taxes are coming, people, and with that there is not only the burden on the consumer, taking away a key internet advantage, but the companies also have an added cost of compliance and reporting.
