Thousands Of Sudanese Volunteers To Guard Oil Pipeline

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP), May 27 -- Some 2,500 Sudanese volunteers headed to southwestern Sudan Thursday to protect an oil pipeline that rebels have threatened to blow up, the official radio said.

It said the volunteers, mostly youths and students, were seen off by Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Abdul-Rahman Sirul-Khatim as they left the capital, Khartoum. The volunteers will be stationed along the 1,600 kilometer-long (1000-mile) pipeline that stretches from the town of el-Obeid in Northern Kordofan province to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. The pipeline is to begin transporting Sudan's first oil export on June 30.

The radio said Thursday's volunteers were the second group sent to the area. It did not say when or how many were sent earlier.

"This oil has become the real challenge.... A contest between us and the evil-spirited (rebel) forces," Khatim told the volunteers who are codenamed the Mujahedeen, or holy warriors. The broadcast did not say how the volunteers will guard the pipeline and if they will be armed.

Earlier this month, the Sudanese government fought rebels in eastern Sudan who have threatened to cut off oil pipelines and the highway linking Khartoum with the Red Sea city of Port Sudan. The rebels declared the highway a military zone and called on civilians to avoid it.
