PICK and Harmonic Data Systems Offer Cable TV Operators Satellite Video Streaming and Fast Internet Access Business Wire - May 26, 1999 14:03 WAYNE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1999--
Using a Single Cable Channel, CATV Operators Can Offer Up to 24 TV-Quality Video Streams or Up to 350 Stereo Audio Streams, Plus High-Speed Internet Access as Part of a Total Broadband Service
PICK Sat Inc., a subsidiary of PICK Communications Corp. (OTCBB:PICK), and Harmonic Data Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT), one of PICK's technology partners, are demonstrating satellite multicast capabilities for delivering high quality video and audio streaming and fast Internet access via existing CATV terrestrial networks at the Cable-Tec Expo '99 in Orlando, Fla., this week.
"This is a unique, turn-key solution for cable TV operators who want to make the leap to the Internet age," said Thomas M. Malone, chief executive officer of PICK Communications Corp. "PICK Sat's technology bypasses congestion on the Internet, allowing cable operators to deliver a range of high-value-added Internet Protocol (IP) services across their networks, including high quality video and audio streaming and fast Internet access."
"Both traditional, and even digital, cable TV systems have channel-capacity limitations," added Malone. "Harmonic Data's CATV solution, coupled with PICK Sat's satellite IP platform, enables cable TV networks to carry up to 24 TV-quality video streams or 350 stereo audio streams down a single cable channel. Users may then access the stream of their choice."
PICK Sat's Internet and IP streaming solution for CATV operators requires little or no expensive Internet backbone, and no modifications to CATV plants are required. The streaming solution is one-way, with return by telephone for fast Internet access, and is quickly deployable in the cable operator's own service brand name.
PICK Sat's platform leverages the company's relationship with Microsoft, whose Windows Media Server technologies are integrated into PICK Sat's Network Operating Center (NOC) in Miami and enable the delivery of large numbers of IP-based channels via a single cable TV video channel.
PICK Sat's sister company, PICK Online.Com, will package the programming to be delivered via PICK Sat's platform in IP multicast form via satellite.
Commenting on Harmonic Data Systems' technology, David Price, vice president of business development for Harmonic Data Systems, said, "CyberStream's ability as an end-to-end system to provide true multicast routing, plus its speed advantage, provides unique value to networks such as these."
Harmonic Data Systems' QAM Cable TV technology will be used to demonstrate the capabilities of PICK Sat's satellite-based multicast platform in the Harmonic Booth (no. 1529) at Cable Tec Expo '99. Things are looking fantastic! I think its better to partner than to buy out. That way they do the R&D,contain costs, and HLIT gets the technology. Tim |
