Joe, I have a feeling that the shorts are tight. According to my calculations, the shorts' tension is probably having an impairing effect, affecting the following shrinkage trends: 3.5" @ 25Newtons/sq.mm = 1.5" 3.5" @ 20Newtons/sq.mm = 2.0" 3.5" @ 15Newtons/sq.mm = 2.5" In my opinion, the position of the shorts is impairing the monkey's ability. Get it?! I think you should just leave the monkey alone.
