KAPLAN'S CORNER: Question: What significance is there to the recent relative strength of gold shares as
compared with the much weaker performance of the yellow metal itself? Answer: Historically, when a lower price for
spot gold is not confirmed by a lower bottom for either the XAU or the Johannesburg Gold Index, it usually means
that a strong rally is closely approaching. For example, gold was moderately lower in March 1993 than in November
1992, but the XAU was modestly higher; gold rallied 30% by August 1993, with the XAU more than doubling in half
a year.
