Thursday March 13 9:38 AM EDT BTG Joins IBM to Work on Year 2000 Challenge FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1997-- BTG Inc announced that it will partner with IBM to help commercial and government organizations address the Year 2000 challenge. BTG will join IBM's Transformation 2000, a program to connect enterprises with experts who can devise solutions to problems created by computer date conversion at the turn of the century. The Year 2000 challenge affects both personal computers and mainframes that use business application software programs written over the last twenty years. Most of these programs use only two digits to specify the year rather than four. Unless the programs are corrected, computers will not be able to tell the difference between the year 1900 and 2000, causing the computer systems to shut down or to perform incorrect calculations. Experts say the impact of the Year 2000 problem is global and estimate the cost of fixing it in the hundreds of billions of dollars. BTG Senior Vice President Jack Littley said the company's 15 years of experience in systems engineering and integration will allow it to solve the most challenging Year 2000 problems. "Each enterprise has unique considerations," Littley said. "For some, the solution may be the replacement of one or more existing systems. Others will require finding and replacing millions of lines of date-related code. There is no single quick fix that works for everyone. BTG's strength is our ability to give each client a customized, well-engineered solution for its Year 2000 problem." In addition to developing solutions, the Transformation 2000 program will offer the use of "conversion factories" where clients can have entire systems modified without disrupting their current operations. Littley said participation in the program by BTG will be beneficial for both organizations as well as for their clients. IBM will have access to BTG's highly skilled system engineers, and BTG will have the opportunity to work with IBM's extensive government and commercial client base. BTG provides information technology services and products to government and commercial clients. The company specializes in systems engineering, integration and network systems, Internet/intranet access and services, community networks, custom computer manufacturing, and the reselling of hardware, software and services.
