Martin-- Couple of ways of looking at it...

It is no surprise that Xircom entered this market. It was really a question of when they would enter it. One could argue that Xircom's entry, though competitive, is also validating. That is, it is a REAL market. Citing IDC's numbers also validates the idea that a handheld revolution is just beginning.

Note that Xircom doesn't give numbers on power consumption in the press release. I couldn't find any power consumption numbers in their technical specs either. Xircom's card will likely draw in the 30mA range as compared to Socket's 18 mA. Don't hold me to Xircom's numbers-- we'll see what they are over the coming weeks but this difference (if correct) could be a big deal for a lot of potential buyers.

Also note Xircom's trademarked "BatterySave" power management. Hmmm.. and Socket's is "Battery Friendly?" Do you think Xircom has noticed Socket? Isn't it the greatest form of flattery when someone models their marketing after yours?

Overall, I'm not concerned. Socket has a broad product portfolio and is right on the cutting edge, especially with serial cards. And Socket's mass market products, phone card and integrated scanner, aren't even on the market yet.

My bet is that we'll see record numbers for 2nd quarter and further signs of strength moving into 3rd quarter.

Good luck.
