jill...third world telephonics...

if you lived in mexico city in the mid eighties, it took on average about two years to get phone service...if you bribe someone at telefonos, they would install your line in about a year and a half...not long ago in metro london it took months...and even in the usa, certain metro areas take weeks if you require multiple lines..

how and why the internet will grow is based on how the service can be delivered..singapore with a pop of 3.5m, will have 100% internet access through wire/cable..mean while everyone talks about latin america growth in pcs, china growth in pcs, big market, but infrastructures extremely expensive to install as in hard wire or cable...so wireless or satellite delivery most efficient, laptops imho will be the pc of choice...why, because of size, status they are primarily powered by batteries...global power systems not like usa, a lot of harmonics and service disruptions....the answer is in the popularity of cell phones in developing areas, easier and swifter to set up a wireless infrastucture..

all is not as we....
