GV: Generally speaking that's not a correct assumption and I would be careful not to tie Xeon to some cause and effect argument on ASPs.

If you want to get the official picture you should go to www.intc.com and check out the last analyst meeting foils from Otellini and Maloney - one of them put up the an updated foil like the one Bryant did six months earlier that showed quarterly ASPs for CPUs. Of course, in standard Intel style the actual numbers were left off the axis, but you could get a pretty good sense visually that all the columns were the same size + or - a few percent.

There was one time in recent (last five years) history where the ASPs could be said to have had a bigger wiggle than others and that was back in Q4'96. Quiz question for the thread: can anybody tell me what was notable about that quarter that would have created this anomoly and tell me which direction the wiggle went?

regards,
jh
