Hi moat,

DUN = Dial Up Networking, v.90 modems and all that. AOL's Steve Case has been in Washington, D.C. lately to try to drum up political support for the notion that cable modem providers are a public utility. He rightly believes that most of his DUN customers (the vast majority of AOL subscribers) will migrate to broadband solutions as they are made available. He wrongly hopes that the government will intervene on his behalf. So far, William Kennard of the FCC is indicating that the regulators will take a hand's off approach to the new battle for eyeballs between the various flavors of ISPs.

Red Hat is not yet publicly traded, although it is expected to be the first Linux distributor to go public.

We are a long way off from the time that shorting MSFT would be prudent. The initiatives introduced by Gates regarding cable distribution of Internet services in Europe, new alliances in China, the push to get Win2000 out the door all point ot a company that is very much living up to its reputation as a fierce competitor on many fronts. there is no one in Redmond who is asleep at the wheel. The recently discussed extensions to Windows Net Meeting in the Win2000 software indicate that M$ remains fully cognizant of and responsive to where the Internet economy is headed.

TTBOMK, Sun will continue to develop and sell Solaris solutions and will not support Linux.

I can't help with your questions regarding YHOO or Inktomi, perhaps others are more knowledgeable.

Best, Ry
