announces $8.5 million sale of CargoSearch Systems to U.S.
Customs

BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1997--American
Science and Engineering, Inc. (AMEX:ASE) today announced the receipt
of orders from U.S. Customs for the installation of four of its
CargoSearch(TM) systems along the southwestern border of the United
States. The value of the contract to AS&E is over $8.5 million.
Delivery and installation of the four units in Arizona and Texas is
expected to take place over the next 24 months and is in addition to
the four units previously ordered by U.S. Customs. CargoSearch(TM)
is AS&E's proprietary X-ray inspection system for vehicles and cargo.

Ralph Sheridan, AS&E's President and Chief Executive Officer,
said: "We are pleased to announce this order, which validates our
belief that CargoSearch(TM) is the right product to meet the needs of
government officials charged with the responsibility of securing
borders and interdicting contraband. Our system has been proven to

The CargoSearch(TM) technology was developed for U.S. Customs
with funding provided by the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA) of the Department of Defense as part of the technology
development program for Operation Hard Line, the federal government's
program to aggressively combat the illegal transport of drugs into
