OT - or since we've got to kill some time waiting for the short squeeze perhaps not OT.

I've simply got to weigh into the "definition of art" debate. I am a rare individual who is entirely untainted by any artistic training whatsoever - either practical or academic beyond Grade 5 finger painting. My opinions are therefore uniquely mine and cannot be the result of any external influence.

I believe that "art" is not necessarily the highest form of communication although I think that that definition is close. IMO to be 'art', a work must communicate something in a manner that transcends the medium. For example, a superbly crafted technical line drawing may be outstanding communication and craftmanship but I would argue that it is not necessarily art. In contrast, a more crudely drawn picture that evokes some deeper perception in the mind of the viewer would be art. Poetry offers a better example. Look at some of the truly great pieces of poetry and compare to a well crafted essay. Poetry is art and uses a variety of techniques to communicate something that just isn't there in an essay.

I'm uncertain whether a piece of work could be art or not art depending on the artist in question. Though I am uncomfortable with the concept I believe that the answer is yes. A poem or drawing that opens a window into the mind of the creator (say someone who had experienced great loss or high triumph) could be art where the same work by, say, me would not.

Any opinions from the educated crowd???
