C - Cube Microsystems Inc. has signed up Avid Technology Inc., Matrox Electronic Systems Ltd., Pinnacle Systems Inc., Fast Multimedia Inc. and Accom Inc. to use its DVxpress digital video editing chip. The design wins will allow the companies to offer in their products editing capabilities including frame accurate MPEG editing and DV to MPEG transcoding. DVxpress also allows co-existence of DV and MPEG in a single system and dual-stream decoding of MPEG content. In other C - Cube news, the company has signed up General Instrument Corp., NDS and its DiviCom subsidiary to use its encoding chips for the next generation of high definition encoding systems. The DVxpert allows broadcasters, satellite service providers and cable operators to deploy high- definition digital broadcasts in compliance with federal mandates. The DVxpert is a single chip multiformat encoder that supports the high- and main-level MPEG profiles and is scalable to support HDTV formats including 1,080-line interlaced, 720-line progressive and 480-line progressive. However, it was not divulged exactly when these next generation encoding systems will be on the market.
