I do agree that raising margin maintenance mid game is unprofessional. But if you must speculate in a leveraged position, check out WBM's posts about buying LT DITM call options, which have similar (though not same) risk-return profiles to margined positions with 0 risk of getting called so you are not forced to sell when the equity makes a swan dive, though there is some time premium decay. But personally since DELL and AOL has done so well (like doubling every year) I really think that LT holders already made a huge amount of money simply holding them, now such high beta stocks are precisely the most vulnerable ones when the market dips periodically, so I would never use leverage on such equities which already have a high level of short term risk.
