Congo peace moves

Officials in Kinshasa say the Democratic Republic of Congo's Justice Minister, Mwenze Kongolo, is going to Uganda for talks about moves to end the fighting in his country.

The Ugandan and Congolese leaders agreed a peace initiative in Libyan-mediated talks last month, although Kampala later played down the accord.

Mr Kongolo's visit follows the unexpected arrival in Kampala of a group of forty Libyan soldiers who say they aim to observe the implementation of a proposed ceasefire.

A Ugandan minister, Stephen Kavuma, said his government first knew of the Libyans' arrival when they asked for clearance to land at Entebbe airport.

Mr Kavuma said Uganda had not expected the Libyans so soon. Uganda and Rwanda are supporting rebel forces fighting in Congo, while Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and Chad are supporting President Laurent Kabila's government.
