Have a good one Marty.

Microsoft Bets Big on XML

Dallas -- When it comes to application and data integration,
Microsoft hopes all roads lead to Babylon.

That's the code name for a technology Microsoft is developing
to link applications based on its DNA framework and legacy
data formats using XML.

Babylon will evolve from another product under development -
- BizTalk Server, due out later this year -- that uses XML for
data translation.

"XML will revolutionize the usage of the Web to make it the
business driver that it can be in terms of application integration
and more advanced forms of e-commerce," said Paul Maritz,
group vice president for Microsoft's developer group, who
gave the keynote address at Microsoft's TechEd conference.

Babylon is based on Microsoft's SNA Server, used integrate
LANs and host systems. The software will provide bi-
directional interoperability between XML-based data and an
undisclosed number of data formats, such as IBM's MQ
Series, CICS and DB2, Maritz said.

Babylon will go into beta later this year but won't ship until
after Windows 2000, he said. -- Jeffrey Schwartz
