The whole business of how object-oriented technology fits in with RDBMS is hard to figure out. It's a widely-held view that Informix made a big mistake by pushing their object-relational stuff too hard. The "pure" ODBMS vendors are doing a pathetic job of marketing their products, and have hardly made a dent on the market (which is not to say that their technologies lack merit).

I think Larry Ellison loves Java because he can use it to taunt Microsoft. Like you, I think that most internet-related applications of Oracle will depend on the core RBDMS functionality. But on the other hand, a product like 8i sends a very good marketing signal that Oracle will evolve its product line in directions tha support e-commerce.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 8i is more important for the marketing message it sends rather than any ground-breaking technology development that enables e-commerce.

It sets a direction. Who knows where it will all lead in the long runs? I don't think anybody knows for sure.
