My brain cells lost Dow theory elements long ago but you are right. But trend identification is difficult as Price takes its ziz-zaz path up and down. The same measures that you would use on a daily chart can be applied to a 5 min chart. The indivdual decides the time frame that he is trading. You will find many ways to make the measurement. Metastock is one of the better charting programs out there. Equis is the company.
