I have heard that as well.

The other part of the equation is that the issuance of currency carries no interest rate return. Thus, it amounts to an interest free loan to the federal government. This advantage becomes especially nice when the currencies are held abroad and become the principal medium of exchange and store of value. Then the foreign countries are subsidizing the US. It gives renewed meaning to being the worlds reserve currency. In this area we now battle the EMU. So far so good, we are winning. The magnitude of the benefit to the US is tens of billions per year.
