It never was a capital offense to not be Christian...The question is always whether or not there is sufficient grounds to trump the will of the majority. If we can open sessions of Congress with a prayer, we can close students public school careers with a prayer. The majority gets to determine how public funds are spent all the time, and this was in all respects incidental to such a concern anyway. Congress is constitutionally enjoined from establishing a church, but also from prohibiting the free exercise of religion. Would a ban on such benedictions be more like establishment, or inhibition of the free exercise of religion? Is there a compelling reason to trump the wishes of the majority?
