George,

Re: MSFT/NXTL

Although I admittedly I have not researched the deal very well this snippet from the article:

. Nextel Online is Nextel's plans to integrate the Internet into cell phones. Exactly how this will be done is unclear, but if you want web info/email/automated paging all in your phone, you'll be able to get this pretty soon.

That leads me to believe that MSFT has made this move in because of the onslaught of HandHeld Internet devices that will sweep the nation as the Christmas season grows nearer.

It's more about paging and email then about surfing the net. These devices are geared mainly towards the mobile office business industry. AOL has already partnered with a wireless provider with the same target audience so don't be surprised when more of these partnerships are made over the next year.

This is all about add on services for the ISP's and Telecos. Long distance has become so cheap because of Internet long distance calls that these add on services are needed by the telecos in order to compete and maintain their revenue streams.

I could go on with a huge list of boring facts about this new wave of communications that is coming because I am invested in some technology companies that build the backbone for this type of communications. I have researched this wireless technology for over a year and know it well.

I will spare the message board any more thoughts on the subject just now.

As far as free ISP competition, at this point AOL is so far ahead of the curve that it would take a very long time if ever to put much of a dent in AOL's revenue stream and growth. I'm thinking of signing with freeweb as my 3rd current ISP connection just to see the pro's and con's for myself. I presently have Mindspring and MSN on this computer. MSN is very unreliable but sometimes comes in handy if MS has a problem.
