This is the future:

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1997-- Hewlett-Packard Company
today introduced a 14-inch viewable-image LCD flat-panel PC monitor that HP believes will
change the personal computing environment dramatically. HP says the new monitor takes up
about one-quarter of the space occupied by a conventional monitor, provides enhanced image
quality and is less expensive to operate than conventional monitors.
With its thin-film transistor active-matrix technology, HP's flat-panel PC monitor offers sharp text
and graphics with bright, uniform colors, resulting in superior image quality. The reduced screen
flicker and a special antiglare coating help ease eyestrain and enhance user comfort.
A reduction in power consumption and heat generation could contribute to measurable
operating-cost savings, compared to traditional monitors. For example, in one recent study by
HP, a typical monitor used $32.50 per year in electricity (at a cost of $.10 per kilowatt hour).
The new flat-panel display would use $11.50 in electricity for a savings of approximately $21.
When extrapolated to a network of monitors, the cost savings could be significant for many
companies.
"Flat-panel monitors are yet another example of how committed HP is to lowering the cost of
personal computing," said Emilio Ghilardi, marketing manager for HP's Commercial Desktop
Computing Division. "These monitors are less expensive to operate than traditional monitors and
offer enhanced image quality and performance."
Flat-panel PC monitors are ideal for computing environments in which space is at a premium.
Banks, travel agencies, trading floors at financial-services companies and medical workstations all
can benefit from more space.
The new HP flat-panel PC monitor meets the low-emissions requirements of both TCO92 and
MRPII, is optimized for resolutions of up to 1,024 x 768 and offers plug-and-play capabilities. A
one-year, on-site, parts-and-labor warranty also is offered as a standard feature.
The HP 14-inch viewable-image LCD flat-panel PC monitor is slated to begin shipping in April,
with an expected average selling price of about $2,419 (U.S.).
