<<I thought they came and picked that stuff up. It goes into a field?>>

You live in a weird area. Do you poop in a hefty bag?

Septic field. Waste water and such from your house goes into a settling tank. Bacteria eat the solids. The liquids flow out into a field and are absorbed by the Earth. The "field" is a series of buried perforated pipes, usually about 100' x 100' and 3' deep.

Municiple plants separate the solids and compost them to be buried and purify the liquids. Most sanitary plants give tours as they are tax supported. The first holding tank is a wonder, it looks like foam on top but the foam is actually used condoms. There's a lot more screwing going on than you can imagine.
