Robert,

I noticed that the article was very cautious about the upturn:

"Applied executives are being cautious in hiring mostly temporary workers in part because they know chip manufacturers can suddenly cancel their orders for expensive equipment during industry
slumps and then rush to order new equipment during an upturn."

There is a good chance I'll run into this same person tonight and so I'll try to get some clarification/confirmation. One thing is for sure; the branch of this company here in Austin is here only to serve the semi-equipment industry and they will be having a temporary layoff this coming week.

Also, I just checked last Sunday's Engineering/Technical help wanted section in the Austin paper and I could only find one big ad for a semi-equipment manufacturer. That was Tokyo Electron. I have been checking this section almost every week and to the best of my recollection there were many more or these big ads 1-3 months ago. Maybe they already filled their HR needs so that's a possible explanation.

Anyway, I'll be out on the town tonight and ask around to see if this is an isolated case or part of an overall trend.

Craig
