I am not a plumber, but more of a handyman. From my experience, these things do last a life time. The only parts that break down are the easily replaceable plungers, seals, handles. Moen and Delta are both good brands.

Besides, installing them is a breeze. Anyone with good hands can do it. Sounds like they are just trying to scare you.
