Since it is a matter of record that nihil has Reb ancestors, I was engaging in my unique and whimsical brand of lite fun.

But on to your serious contention. I do not think that for Union soldiers it was any different than for current Serb infantry. Patriotic duty to a country whose leaders have seen fit to meet the threat of losing territory with violence. After all - territory is the foundation of empire. It's all about land and power. The slave dealie was superimposed propaganda imho.
