Stephen,
I agree with you that a shorter term outlook for this toppy market is important. I hardly short term trade with the intention to make a buck simply because I am too busy during the day to be able to do it well. All my short term trades are for protection purposes only. I research about 50 issues and zero in on 2-5 at a time that I want to hold long term base on P/E, growth and most importantly a good story. Then I monitor the long term charts to see if it is buyable. What I try to do is to catch the stock that is either keep moving up or temporary oversold due to factors other than the stock itself (like what we have now). Then I try to get the best price by looking at the short term price movement with the quotrek. Personally, micro-managing the entry point helps a lot as I was able to side step quite a few disaster.
I monitor all my stocks on a daily base so that I don't get hurt too much in this market. My level of pain tolerance is 7-15% loss. I have in the past held on to a stock until it was down more than 50% which was very stupid and I simply refuse to do that again. In this fast moving market, sometime a stock can drop more than 15% in a couple of days. I think it is suicidal to buy or hold a stock and not manage it by watching the price and volume trends. A broker friend told me that it is absolutely essential in this market to exit when you have big loss or big gains. I would like to have more than 100% gains but lately everything I hold stops at 20% or so and turn South. However, because of the -7% rule I was able to preserve some nice gains in RIG and GLM when the prices turned down to below 7% from their top.RIG is now in the dog house.
Also by monitoring the price trend with Quotrek, I was able to save a friend of mine about $20K trading CTN although he has enough loss for tax write off for the rest of his life.
Good luck with your trades.
When do you think RSYS may bottom ? I am actively monitoring it every day so I can go in and out to maintain my position and average in. That being said, this whole market has dropped so much so fast. A rebound is in order shortly, IMHO.
